The Ayushman Bharat mission, launched in 2018, stands as India’s flagship health initiative, with two pillars addressing urban health:
- Health and Wellness Centres (HWCs): These primary care units replace older sub-centres, extending outpatient services and preventive/curative care. Over 150,000 HWCs have already been established.
- Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY): Offers health insurance of ₹5 lakh per family per year, cashless and paperless, covering both public and private hospitals nationwide. There’s no restriction on family size or pre-existing conditions, and the coverage even includes pre- and post-hospitalisation costs and COVID-19 testing
